ABBYY FineReader

ABBYY FineReader uses OCR (optical character recognition) to detect text in scanned documents, PDF files, as well as images. This means that ABBYY FineReader will take scans, PDFs, or images and will use them to create searchable and editable documents. There are several ABBYY FineReader editions to choose from: ABBYY FineReader Professional for Windows, ABBYY FineReader Pro for Mac OS X, and ABBYY FineReader Touch for Windows 8 touch devices. The Professional edition for Windows is free to use for a trial period of 15 days. The Touch version for Windows 8 touch devices is free.

By default, the New Task wizard is displayed at startup. This wizard displays numerous functions: turn scan to Microsoft Word document, turn scan to searchable PDF, turn photo to Microsoft word document, and more.

If you decide to open an image for example, the image will be displayed on the left hand side of the application’s interface. The text extracted from that image will be presented on the right hand side of the application’s interface. Above these two there’s a toolbar with buttons for various functions ABBYY FineReader can perform.

You can load scanned documents, PDF files, or photos into ABBYY FineReader. The application will use OCR technology to detect and extract the text from the scan, PDF, or image you loaded. You can view, edit, and save the extracted text – as Word document, PDF, EPUB, or another format. You can also send the extracted text to your default email application or to your Kindle.

As mentioned above, ABBYY FineReader Professional is free to use for a trial period of 15 days. It must be mentioned that the trial is limited to 50 pages and allows you to save only 1 page at a time.
